The Dispute Settlement Center is a 501 (c) 3 dispute resolution center and is a project of the Better Business Bureau Foundation of Western New York, Inc. Funding for the Dispute Settlement Center comes from the Better Business Bureau, grants and various fee-for-service income or other revenue producing dispute resolution activities. A major focus of the BBB Dispute Settlement Center is our "Commercial Resolutions" arbitration program which offers a time efficient low cost alternative court proceedings for most marketplace disputes. Once a matter has been referred to the Dispute Settlement Center as potentially suitable for dispute resolution, trained program staff carefully screens each case, explains the arbitration process, and prepares the parties for an arbitration hearing. In arbitration, a trained arbitrator hears and examines the matter in dispute and renders a legally binding decision. The Dispute Settlement Center maintains contracts with a variety of other agencies for dispute resolution services. For example, the Dispute Settlement Center, contracts with the City of Buffalo and the County of Erie to administer arbitration for consumers with disputes against home improvement contractors where the consumers have received city or state funding to hire the contractor. The Dispute Settlement Center also has experience administering a Stop-Shoplifting Program for first time shoplifting offenders throughout the Western New York area. |
